How do accumulator bets work? A plain English guide

An accumulator, often called an acca, is a single bet that combines several selections into one. Every selection has to win for the bet to pay out. If one leg loses, the whole bet loses.

How the odds multiply

Accumulator odds are worked out by multiplying the decimal odds of every leg together. Say you pick three teams to win, each at decimal odds of 2.00:

  • Leg 1: 2.00
  • Leg 2: 2.00
  • Leg 3: 2.00

Combined odds: 2.00 x 2.00 x 2.00 = 8.00. A €10 stake returns €80 if all three win.

This is why accumulators are popular. Small stakes can return large amounts, and adding more legs grows the price quickly. Five legs at 2.00 each pays 32.00, so €10 returns €320.

Your real chance of winning

The flip side is that your chance of winning shrinks with every leg you add. If each selection has a 50% chance, three legs give you 0.5 x 0.5 x 0.5 = 12.5%. Five legs drop to about 3%.

Bookmakers also build a margin into every price. When you multiply legs together, you multiply their margin too. That is why bookmakers promote accumulators so heavily: they are their most profitable product.

How to build a smarter acca

  1. Fewer legs, better chances. A three or four leg acca at a fair price beats a ten leg lottery ticket most weeks.
  2. Compare the combined price to the true chance. If your combined odds are 10.00, the implied chance is 10%. If you honestly rate the chance higher than that, the bet has value. If not, walk away.
  3. Mix markets, not just winners. Over 2.5 goals, both teams to score and double chance selections often price better than straight wins on heavy favourites.
  4. Check team news. A rested striker or a suspended centre back can swing a leg. Late team news matters more in accumulators because one bad leg kills the bet.

Each way accumulators

In horse racing you can place an each way acca, which is really two bets: one on all selections to win and one on all selections to place. In football, accumulators are win only.

The bottom line

Accumulators are entertainment with a price. Treat them as a small stakes fun bet, keep the leg count sensible, and never chase losses by adding more legs. If you want help finding combinations where the price looks bigger than the real risk, that is exactly what the Lab's predictor is built for.
